—— A Dialogue with the Perfumer of the Relief Atelier Series
In 2025, Lumine launched the Relief Atelier Series designed for personal living spaces. In this issue, we sit down with the perfumer behind the scents.
For the past twelve years, Eliana Marquez has held only one identity: the "Invisible Olfactory Architect" behind high-end global hotels. From five-star hotels to your home: 4 candles designed for bedroom, study, living room, entryway.
Why would a lab built for huge hotel spaces care about a 15 m² bedroom? We asked the perfumer for 4 “spatial prescriptions”—what to burn, where, and why it works.
Q: From grand hotel lobbies to bedside tables, what is Lumine's core philosophy?
Eliana: In the hospitality industry, the most important lesson we learned is: "Scent is a service, not a disturbance." Lumine’s rule is restraint: 8–12 core notes per candle so the scent reads clean, not crowded.
Below are the "Spatial Prescriptions" and detailed technical breakdowns designed for the four core needs of the modern home:
1. A Prescription for "Security" NO.1 | Peach Blossom & Ambergris

Q: Why choose the combination of Peach Blossom and Ambergris?
Eliana: This is a "low-frequency composition" designed for the bedroom. We reduced the high-frequency stimulation of top notes and emphasized base notes with physical weight, like Ambergris. Bedroom scent should feel like “skin temperature”—warm, salty, and emotionally safe.
Scent Profile
- Top: Peach Blossom, Apricot Blossom — A light, bright opening
- Heart: Soft Florals — The bridge of transition
- Base: Ambergris — The core soul, simulating the warmth of skin
| Best Scenario | Bedroom, Bathroom, Reading Nook (15-20 m²) |
|---|---|
| Scent Evolution | Bright florals for the first 10 minutes; the warm "halo" of Ambergris emerges only after about 25-30 minutes. |
| Style Benchmark | Similar to the gentle temperament of Guerlain Le Bouquet de Tilleuls or Jo Malone Nectarine Blossom & Honey, but more intimate and skin-like. |
2. A Prescription for "Order" NO.2 | Juniper & Oakmoss

Q: Study room scents are often difficult to execute. What was the design logic here?
Eliana: Modern anxiety stems from chaos, so a study needs "structure." We define this fragrance as having a "quiet architectural sense." Study scent needs structure: dry juniper lines + an oakmoss foundation to hold focus. We deliberately eliminated sweetness to allow you to quickly find an anchor for focus amidst chaotic information.
Scent Profile
- Top: Juniper, Iris, Clary Sage — A cold, dry herbal opening
- Heart: Cedarwood, Cardamom — A stable woody structure
- Base: Oakmoss, Labdanum, Tonka Bean — Deep, moist earthy tones
| Best Scenario | Studio, Study, Living Room (15-20 m²) |
|---|---|
| Scent Evolution | For a crisp feel, burn for a short time; to experience the deep layers of Oakmoss, burn for over 2.5 hours. |
| Style Benchmark | Possesses the sophisticated detachment of Dior Homme (Iris series) or Chanel No.19 (Green cool tones). |
3. A Prescription for "Artistry" NO.3 | Fig & Cedarwood

Q: Fig has been very popular recently. How is Lumine's interpretation different?
Eliana: Many fig fragrances achieve "green" but overlook "lushness." We wanted to create an organic "texture." Living room: fig done with texture—pine resin for raw green, coconut for a soft, modern finish. This isn't tropical; it is designed to add thickness to the scent, making it smell like a piece of modern pottery with warmth.
Scent Profile
- Top: Fig, Pine Resin, Citrus — Textured greenery
- Heart: Hyacinth, Coconut — Silky milky refinement
- Base: Cedarwood, Amberwood — A warm, modern woody finish
| Best Scenario | Living Room, Creative Space, Afternoon Leisure (15-20 m²) |
|---|---|
| Scent Evolution | After about 25 minutes, the "comfort" of coconut and wood fully fuses, revealing excellent layering. |
| Style Benchmark | If you like the green texture of Diptyque Philosykos or Creed Green Irish Tweed, this is the perfect interior version. |
4. A Prescription for "Reset" NO.4 | Lime & Basil

Q: Citrus notes can easily smell cheap. How did you solve this problem?
Eliana: The key lies in "breathability." Entryway/Kitchen: use a “reset button” scent—bright top notes, dry herbs, and a grounded base. We used a significant amount of Basil and Thyme, utilizing herbal spice to cut through the citrus sugar, making the scent dry and crisp. The Vetiver base ensures it settles down, rather than floating in mid-air like a generic air freshener.
Scent Profile
- Top: Lime, Sweet Orange, Bergamot — A bright citrus burst
- Heart: Basil, Clove, Orris Root — Clean herbal air
- Base: Patchouli, Vetiver — A green base with strong grip
| Best Scenario | Kitchen, Entryway, Shared Spaces (15-20 m²) |
|---|---|
| Scent Evolution | Short burn times maintain citrus crispness; longer burns bring out the composure of Vetiver, suitable for afternoon relaxation. |
| Style Benchmark | Similar to the freshness of Jo Malone Lime Basil & Mandarin, but the dry down leans more towards the herbal cleanliness of Diptyque Eau de Minthé. |
Finally, why do Lumine candles burn so stably?
Eliana: It is about physics, and it is about people.
We insist on a golden pouring temperature of 54.5°C, solely to physically lock in the essential oil molecules. And in our Nayong atelier, every single candle passes through the scrutiny of visually impaired artisans' fingertips—we call this "The Tactile Advantage." It is this group of people, most sensitive to detail, who ensure the perfection of every vessel.
